Frequently asked questions

Do I need Horse riding experience?

No experience is required. Our treks are designed for all confidence levels, including beginners. Your guide will match you with a calm, suitable horse and provide full instruction before and during the ride.

How many people can ride together?

We take private small groups only. The usual maximum is 2 but bespoke group sizes may be arranged on enquiry.

What should I wear

We recommend long pants, closed-toe shoes, and comfortable layers. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also advised. Helmets are provided and required for all riders.

Is there a weight limit?

Yes, for horse welfare and safety, our weight limit is 100kg.

If you’re unsure, feel free to check with us.

Where do the treks depart from?

All treks begin from our stables. If you're staying with us at HenareNZ, we will collect you from your cabin. Directions and parking information will be provided upon confirmation.

How do I book?

All bookings are made via email or enquiry form. We personally confirm each trek to ensure availability, safety, and ideal riding conditions.

Are the treks private?

Yes — all rides at Henare Horse Treks are private and tailored to your group only.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If weather conditions are unsafe, we will reschedule your trek or offer a refund. Light rain is generally fine — the west coast is rugged and beautiful in all conditions.

 Are photos allowed?

Absolutely — we encourage it. Your guide can help take photos at safe points during the trek.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance, especially during the summer season (Oct–Mar), as spaces are limited.

What is the age limit?

Riders must be 18 years or older. Younger riders may be considered case-by-case depending on confidence and ability.
